Patterns to Make...
For Gift Knitting Season
Gift Knitting Season is well and truly underway. If, like me, you tend to lose your mojo while knitting gifts, then these pattern suggestions are for you.
Over the years, I’ve learned that the best gift knits are the ones you actually finish (on time). This means they need to be quick, relatively simple, and easy to pick up whenever you have a spare 10 minutes.
There are certainly knitters out there who will gladly make a full cable jumper or pair of fair isle mittens for every friend and neighbour each season - this post is not for them.
These suggestions are for my fellow low-effort, high-yield knitters. We know who we are.
I’ve included a combination of accessories here. If you do intend to knit a garment for someone this season, let me know and I will share my suggestions on how to go about that.
So, without further ado, here are 7 patterns to make for gift knitting season:
Musselburgh Hat by Ysolda Teague
I am currently knitting three of these guys as gifts and I cannot recommend this pattern enough! It is a bit fiddly at the start and at the end, but the rest of the time this project is super simple and portable. Great for knitters on the go!
I’m So Basic Sock by Summer Lee Design Co.
This is a free, vanilla sock pattern ideal for beginner sock knitters. It includes a number of helpful pictures and written explanations breaking down each step of the process. It also notes how you can customise each pair of socks you make.
Sleepy Bunny Cuddle Blanket by AftenStrikk
I always think a cuddly toy or blanket is a really cute gift for new babies. So, if you are planning to knit something for a baby in your life, I recommend this pattern. The designer has a lot of different toy patterns to chose from too (in case a bunny isn’t the vibe)!
Warm Wishes Hot Water Bottle Cover by Purl Soho
This is another free pattern and a great option when you aren’t sure what to make. I love the idea of duplicate stitch or embrodery to further customise this pattern as well.
Sailor Slippers by Annie Germain
This is a pretty new pattern but I think felted wool slippers are a fantastic gift idea. Plus, these are made at a pretty large gauge, so will work up rather fast. I think it would be so cute to make a matching set for yourself and a partner or give to someone who is usually hard to shop for.
Ole Mittens by Susanne Müller
This is a bit of a cheat because I want to knit these for myself this winter. But I know if I like it, usually my girlfriends will too. So, this is a great option for friends and family who live in colder climates.
Marielle Scarf by Maria Schei Mogenstad
This pattern is a good one for the more stylish recipients. I also think a trendier piece like this, in a fun colour is a good precursor to a more involved gift knit (i.e. a sweater). There are various options included in this pattern, from a headscarf to a shawl, so you can choose which will suit your recipient best.
I would love to hear what you are knitting as gifts this season. Let's talk about it in the subscriber chat!

Thank you, Imogen. My beloveds are getting Annie's felted slippers. Just bought the pattern.
